Classroom without Walls :: Blog :: Core 5 North Shore Experience

May 15, 2008

WHAT A DAY!
The day started with a visit to Leonard's Bakery for a few malasadas for breakfast. Yummy! The flavor of the month is mango. We then began the long journey to the North Shore. Our next stop was Dole Pineapple Plantation. We needed to work off the malasadas and work up an appetite for some pineapple ice cream so we ran around one of the largest mazes in the world for a while. The maze made it into the Guiness Book of Records in 2001. We continued our adventure on to Matsumoto's Shave Ice for yet another sweet delight. The next stop was Laniakea Beach where the Honu (turtles) like to come up and relax on the sand. We saw a big turtle and the ranger told us that he was about 55 years old. The interesting thing was that he had a really long tail. Believe it or not, the students were hungry again, so we headed to Giovanni's Shrimp Truck for some shrimp scampi. Reeking of garlic, we loaded back into the van and headed for Waimea Bay for a swim and some fun in the sand. Finally, we returned to HTIC thoroughly tuckered out. All in all it was a great cultural experience and the students had the opportunity to speak, hear and read lots of English and also write about their experience. You can't teach that in a classroom!
