Narumi Sugimura :: Blog :: Final CP Program Reflection Project

June 19, 2009

I have been studying abroad in Hawaii almost for a year. At the first time, I did not know what are noun, verb, adjective, and adverb because I did not have enough knowledge about English. However, I loved to talk to people from different cultures even though I could not speak fluently. When I was a core 1, I always tried to write journal what I did even I went back to Japan, I continued to write. After my teacher gave me some comments, I rewired every time because I could realize what was wrong with my sentences. Whatever I do, I need to set my goal high because I want to make my dreams come true. Therefore, I had the aim of lesson each CP program. For instance, when I was a core 2, my aim of lesson was increasing vocabulary because it is the most important thing to learn English. If I do not know anything words, I cannot write, read, and listen. When I was a core 3, I wanted to communicate with people from different cultures because we study English, so I started Hula to practice not only dancing, but also speaking. My speaking skills were increased. After that, I thought I was lack of reading skills because I read very slowly. When I took TOEFL, I always could not finish reading section, so I tried to read a book every day. It was very difficult for me, but I told myself I should work harder to make my dreams come true. I do not know how much I have improved my English from core1 to now, but I am sure that I can mostly understand what native speaker are talking about and I can write essay long. And also, my vocabulary is increasing so that I can read book and listing. I have learned not only basics in English, but also world history, sociology, cross cultural communication, and American studies. One of the most unforgettable experiences was teaching English to Children when I was a core 4. It was a fabulous opportunity to communicate with people from different culture. I leaned numerous things that I need to be a good English speaker. The children are taught English as a second language which is the same as me. I thought leaning second language is very positive aspect not only for me, but also for children. However, teaching second language to children was not easy because we should make the classroom comfortable to attract the interest of the students, getting the students to participate, being a sensitive teacher, and keeping the student’s attention. These experiences will always be good for me as well as the children because I should speak clearly. I think the CP program has prepared my for the LA program because I learned numerous things from this program. After graduating from HTIC, I would transfer to a four year college in New York to study dance because my ideal dream is to be a Broadway dancer. I would make people’s dreams come true through my dancing and then, I would dance with people from different cultures. I would make a circle of international friendships through my experiences. Therefore, I need English.
