Yuna Ito (a former Honolulu "McKinley High School" graduate) and Celine Dion (a French Canadian) have collaborated on a single called "A World to Believe In" (Anata Ga Iro Kagiri). MOBY-DICK, the great white whale!

Do you like whales? Have you ever read the book "Moby-Dick"? Here are some movie clips to capture your interest.

The book “Moby-Dick” is a novel written in 1851 by the author Herman Melville. The story tells about the adventures of the narrator—a wandering sailor named "Ishmael" and his voyage on a whaling ship named “Pequod.” The ship is commanded by Captain Ahab. Ishmael believes he has signed onto a routine voyage aboard a normal whaling vessel, but he soon learns that Captain Ahab does not intend to use his ship the “Pequod” to hunt whales for trading in the markets (which most whaling ships generally do). Instead, he is seeking one specific whale named "Moby-Dick." Moby-Dick, a ferocious great white whale, is infamous for his huge size and ability to destroy any whalers who seek him. Captain Ahab has a wooden leg that is the result of his first meeting with Moby-Dick. (Not very many whaling ships know about Moby-Dick, nor have they ever seen him.) However, Captain Ahab encountered him. When he first met Moby-Dick, the whale destroyed Captain Ahab’s boat and bit off his leg. Now Captain Ahab intends to find Moby-Dick and seek revenge!

February 14 is Valentine's Day. One of the most famous love stories in the world is William Shakespeare's play "Romeo and Juliet." There are two great movies based on his play:

(1) 1996 movie starring Leonard DiCaprio (as Romeo) and Claire Danes (as Juliet).

(2) 1968 movie starring a British actor, Leonard Whiting (as Romeo) and Olivia Hussey (as Juliet).

This 1968 movie was filmed entirely in Italy in many locations. The balcony scene was filmed at the Palazzo Borghese in Artena (20 miles south of Rome). The Palazzo was built by Cardinal Scipione Borghese in the 16th century.

2008 WHALE COUNT NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

“The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is looking for volunteers for its 2008 Ocean Count.

Volunteers will be counting whales and recording their behaviors from more than 65 shore sites. It’s an opportunity to learn about whale population, distribution and behavioral trends.

The first counts will be Saturday, Jan. 26. Other counts will be Saturday, Feb. 23 and Saturday, March 29 from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. To register, call 397-2651.”
